Local art on our walls

We love sharing our walls with people who paint here in Kent. Everything around the café is original work by local artists, and most of it is for sale. If a piece catches your eye, just ask at the counter and we'll put you in touch.

David Swaine

David is a Tenterden oil painter who began his working life in a drawing office, drawing maps. These days he paints outdoors through the summer and in the studio over winter, and he clearly loves this corner of Kent: the High Street and the church, the back lanes, the black fishermen's huts down on the coast.

He also paints portraits, houses, gardens and pets to commission.

Watercolour & miniatures

Wendy Sabine

Wendy is an award-winning Kent artist and an elected member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters (RMS) and the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists. The pieces on our wall show her love of the local coast: soft watercolours and oil pastels of Camber Sands and Pett Pools.

She's perhaps best known for her tiny, jewel-like miniatures and her paintings on shell and agate.

Pen, ink & wash

Phil Presland

Phil works in fine pen and ink and soft ink wash, with a calm, almost East Asian feel. His subjects are mostly animals and trees: a cat watching the blossom fall, badgers gathered under a bare winter oak, mist settling over the hills.

Phil is a member of the Weald of Kent Art Society.

Glen paints in oils, and brings a bit of sunshine indoors: bright Mediterranean harbours with little wooden boats, and whitewashed streets spilling over with red geraniums.

A warm contrast to a grey Kent morning, and a favourite with visitors.

Mark makes signed, limited-edition prints, and many are Kent through and through: Scotney Castle, Tenterden's church tower in The Jewel of the Weald, textured studies of lone trees and old stone, and the odd still life. Every piece is for sale.

The wall changes as pieces sell and new work comes in, so there's nearly always something different to look at. Most pieces are for sale, and very reasonably priced. If something catches your eye, just ask at the counter and we'll put you in touch with the artist.
